Why you need to be smarter about borrowing than ever

Let’s be honest — life’s getting more expensive. Whether it’s the weekly shop, rent, or keeping the lights on, many Aussie families are feeling the pinch, and sometimes borrowing money seems like the only way to get by or grab opportunities. But borrowing can be a helpful tool or a dangerous trap, depending on how you use it. This guide walks through everything you need to know about borrowing responsibly in 2025 — from new regulations that actually protect you, to practical tips that keep you out of financial hot water.

CashPal's Guide to Responsible Borrowing in 2025

What’s changing in Australia’s lending world

ASIC is looking out for you

ASIC works to stop lenders giving you loans you can’t afford. When you apply with CashPal, we can’t just look at your income and say “yep, looks good” — we check your bills, existing debts, even your HELP debt. It might seem like a hassle, but it protects you from borrowing more than you can realistically repay.

Buy Now Pay Later just got real

From 10 June 2025, BNPL companies must play by the same rules as traditional lenders — checking affordability before letting you split payments, holding proper licences, and joining AFCA so you have somewhere to turn if things go wrong. It’s about stopping people accidentally building debt across multiple platforms.

Mortgages got tougher

APRA requires banks to test whether you can still afford a mortgage if rates rise 3 percentage points — so a 6% loan is assessed as if it were 9%. They also count all your debts, including student loans, though APRA is reviewing how HELP debt is treated, which may ease things for some borrowers.

The interest rate reality check

Where rates sit right now

As of April 2025 the cash rate sits at 4.10% — well above COVID lows, but the Reserve Bank has already cut twice this year and more cuts may come. If you have a variable home loan, repayments may start easing; if you're taking new borrowing, rates are higher than a few years ago but no longer climbing.

Your debt-to-income ratio is your new best friend

Simple maths that can save you serious trouble: add up all monthly debt repayments (mortgage, cards, personal loans, BNPL) and divide by your monthly income. If more than 30–40% of your income goes to debt, you're in the danger zone — earning $5,000 a month with $2,000 in repayments is 40%, and both lenders and your budget will feel it.

How CashPal keeps you safe

When you apply for a loanwith us, we don’t just tick boxes — we look at your actual bank statements, real expenses, and whether the loan makes sense for your situation: what you really spend on groceries, petrol and bills, whether you have emergency savings, and whether this loan will improve your position or worsen it. Through the Consumer Data Right we can access your real banking data (with your permission), so instead of digging through months of statements, we see actual spending patterns in real time — secure, faster, and clearer.

And when life happens — job loss, sickness, unexpected expenses — we have structured hardship programs to help you get back on track. If you’re ever unhappy with how we handle things, you can take a complaint to AFCA for free.

Choosing the right loan for your situation

Personal loans — reliable

Best for bigger expenses like renovations, consolidation or major purchases: a fixed amount, fixed repayments, and a clear end date. Need $15,000 for a car? A personal loan from CashPal gives you the money upfront with set repayments — you know exactly what you’ll pay and when you’ll be debt-free.

Payday loans — emergencies only

For genuine emergencies when you need cash fast. Payday loans cost more than other options, but sometimes the car needs fixing to get to work and payday is a week away. Golden rule: only borrow what you can repay next payday, and don’t make it a habit.

Lines of credit — flexible

Like a credit card but typically with better rates: approved for a limit, you only pay interest on what you use. Great for irregular expenses or as a safety net — approved for $10,000 but only using $2,000 for medical bills means paying interest on $2,000. It requires discipline.

Your action plan for smart borrowing

Get your numbers straight first

Use free tools like ASIC's MoneySmart calculators to see actual repayments and the total cost over the loan's life. Borrowing $20,000 at 8% over 5 years costs about $405/month — but nearly $24,300 in total. That extra $4,300 is the cost of borrowing; make sure it's worth it.

Protect your credit score

Pay everything on time, every time. Don't apply for multiple loans or cards at once. Keep old accounts open, even if unused. And check your credit report annually for errors.

Spot the warning signs early

Only making minimum payments on credit cards, using credit for everyday expenses like groceries, borrowing from one source to pay another, and avoiding opening bills or checking balances are all red flags.

Reach out early

If you recognise these patterns, reach out before things get worse — free financial counselling is available through the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007. Borrowing money is a tool, not a solution to ongoing financial problems. Used wisely, it can help you achieve your goals; used carelessly, it can make your problems much worse.
