The short answer

A dental loan is a small personal loan used to pay for dental treatment — from a check-up or filling through to crowns, braces or emergency surgery. It suits Australians who need work done now but would rather spread the cost than delay treatment or drain their savings. Through CashPal you can apply for $500 to $2,000, with applications often processed within 60 minutes during business hours and funds sent once your contract is signed. You’ll need to be 18 or over, an Australian resident with a regular income and an active bank account.

Cover dental costs with CashPal

When people think about going to the dentist, there’s only one word that comes to mind: painful! That’s what people remember when they think about the dentist, especially when dental surgery is required. However, this isn’t the only reason so many Aussies put off going to the dentist — one of the biggest reasons is that going to the dentist can be expensive.

What people often overlook is that regular check-ups with your local dentist will reduce the chance of major dental work. It improves dental hygiene and boosts personal confidence and overall mental health. So, if you can get past the painful part, we at CashPal can help you with the expensive part with our dental loans.

What is a dental loan?

Dental loans are personal loans (either secured or unsecured) specifically designed to cover various dental procedures. These loans typically range from $500 to $2,000, with flexible repayment terms, depending on the loan amount and your financial situation.

Our online platform quickly matches you with appropriate lenders based on your specific requirements and circumstances. This allows you to access necessary treatment without delay when faced with unexpected dental expenses that may run into thousands of dollars.

Why consider dental financing?

Dental procedures can be both uncomfortable and expensive, which is why many Australians delay necessary treatment. According to recent health surveys, approximately 40% of Australian adults postpone dental visits due to cost concerns. A dental loan or personal loan for dental work can help bridge this financial gap. Regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining oral health, preventing major dental work, and supporting overall wellbeing and confidence.

At CashPal, we understand that unexpected dental expenses can strain your finances. Our dental loans service connects you with suitable lenders to help you manage these costs effectively and promptly, with potential approval times as quick as 60 minutes during business hours. Whether you need a loan for dental treatment or a specialised loan for dental work, we can help.

Understanding the costs of dental loans

The cost of your dental loan will vary based on the lender we match you with and your specific circumstances. Each of our lending partners offers different terms, interest rates, and fee structures.

If your application receives approval, we strongly recommend reviewing your loan contract thoroughly before acceptance. This document contains all relevant information about interest rates, establishment fees, and any ongoing charges associated with your loan.

Repayment process

Timely repayment of your dental loan is crucial to avoid additional fees, charges, or defaults. Upon loan approval, your lender will help establish an automatic direct debit system on an agreed schedule (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly). This automated process eliminates manual payment management — you simply need to ensure sufficient funds are available in your account for each scheduled payment.

If a payment fails due to insufficient funds, you may incur a dishonour fee as outlined in your loan contract. Should you anticipate difficulty making an upcoming payment, we recommend contacting your lender immediately to discuss potential alternative arrangements.

Dental loan FAQs

Can I use a dental loan for braces or cosmetic work?+

Yes. A dental loan can go toward any dental treatment, including braces, crowns, implants, veneers and whitening, as well as urgent work like extractions and root canals. The funds land in your account, so you choose the clinic and the treatment.

Can I borrow just the gap my health fund does not cover?+

Yes, and often that is the sensible amount. Borrow the gap rather than the full invoice — fees are charged on the amount borrowed, so a smaller loan costs less overall.

Do I need a treatment plan or quote to apply?+

No. You can apply before your appointment. Many people apply with a rough estimate so they know their budget before committing to a treatment plan.

How much can I borrow for dental work?+

From $500 to $2,000 over a term of up to 12 months. Borrowing $1,000 over 6 months at the maximum regulated fees totals $1,440 repayable — the full breakdown is shown above before you apply.

Before you apply — risks, reasons for decline, and alternatives

A small loan solves a short-term gap; it is not free money, and it is not right for every situation. Worth asking yourself first:

  • Do I actually need this? A short-term loan suits an essential or unexpected cost, not discretionary spending.
  • Can I afford the repayments? Check them against your real income and expenses, not your best month.
  • Am I borrowing the right amount? Fees are charged on the amount borrowed, so a smaller loan costs less.
  • Would another option cost less? If one of the alternatives below fits, use it first.

Why applications get declined. We are required to lend only where repayments are affordable, so an application is most often unsuccessful because:

  • The repayments would not be affordable alongside your current commitments
  • Income cannot be verified, or is not regular enough to assess
  • Recent defaults, an active hardship arrangement, or several short-term loans already running
  • Frequent dishonours or overdrawn balances in recent banking history
  • Application details do not match the supporting information provided
  • The basic criteria are not met — under 18, or not an Australian resident

A decline is not permanent. It usually reflects the last few months of banking history, so applying again after that settles often gives a different outcome.

Alternatives worth trying first. Depending on your situation, one of these may cost you nothing:

  • No Interest Loans (NILs) — up to $2,000 for essentials with no interest and no fees, for people on a low income or with a concession card. Call 13 64 57 or visit nils.com.au.
  • Centrelink advance payment — if you receive eligible payments, you may be able to draw part of it early, repaid from future payments at no cost. Call 13 17 94 or visit servicesaustralia.gov.au.
  • Your provider’s hardship program — energy, water, telco and council bills can usually be put on a payment plan, often with the debt paused, simply by asking.
  • Free financial counselling — the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 is free, independent and confidential, and can negotiate with creditors on your behalf.
  • Impartial guidance — ASIC’s MoneySmart compares options and explains what each really costs.

What a CashPal loan costs

Fees on small loans are capped by Australian law. CashPal cannot charge more than these caps, and a small amount credit contract carries no interest beyond them.

Establishment fee ($500–$2,000)Up to 20% of the amount borrowed
Monthly feeUp to 4% per month
Establishment fee ($2,001–$5,000)Up to $400
Interest on larger loansUp to 48% p.a.
Early repayment feeNil

These are the maximum regulated caps, not a quote. The fees that apply to you are itemised in your contract before you sign, and you are under no obligation to accept an offer.

Source: the National Credit Code, Schedule 1 to the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009 (s 31A for small amount contracts, s 32A for medium amount contracts).

Representative example

Borrowing $1,000 over 6 months

Amount borrowed$1,000
Establishment fee (20%)$200
Monthly fee (4% × 6)$240
Total repayable$1,440
weekly
$55.38
fortnightly
$110.77
monthly
$240.00

How this is worked out

The establishment fee is 20% of the amount borrowed, charged once. The monthly fee is 4% of the amount borrowed, charged for each month of the term. Total repayable = amount borrowed + establishment fee + monthly fees.

Assumes the maximum regulated fees, every repayment made on time, no default or dishonour fees, and the loan running its full term. Repaying early costs less — there is no early repayment fee, and you stop paying monthly fees once the loan is closed. Your own figures are set out in your contract.
