Loans available through Centrelink
Centrelink is an Australian government agency providing financial assistance to eligible individuals, families and communities — including a range of loans and grants for people who need help managing their finances. Here’s what’s available, who qualifies, and how to apply.

The two most-used programs
1. Advance Payment
An Advance Payment lets eligible customers receive part of their payment early. You can apply if you receive a regular Centrelink payment, have been getting it for at least three months, and have a good repayment history. Singles can borrow up to $1,100 and couples up to $1,600, repaid over six months through regular deductions — interest-free, with no additional fees.
2. Pension Loans Scheme
The Pension Loans Scheme helps eligible pensioners who own Australian real estate increase their income through regular loan payments. The amount depends on your property value and pension, paid fortnightly and repaid with interest when the property is sold or the estate settled — at a rate lower than most commercial cash loans.

3. Student Start-up Loan
For full-time students receiving Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY living allowance — covering textbooks, equipment and accommodation. Borrow up to $1,094 per year, interest-free, with repayment only once you earn above the repayment threshold.
4. Farm Household Allowance
For eligible farmers and families experiencing hardship from drought or natural disasters, covering essential living expenses like food, clothing and bills. Borrow up to $95,000 over four years, interest-free, repaid when your financial situation improves — with no fixed repayment schedule.
5. Family Tax Benefit Advance
For families receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A — covering school uniforms, medical and household bills. Borrow up to $1,205 for singles or $2,020 for couples, repaid over six months through regular Centrelink deductions, interest-free.
How to apply for Centrelink loans
- 1
Check your eligibility
Each loan has its own criteria — read the information on Centrelink’s website carefully or call their customer service team.
- 2
Apply online or by phone
Apply through your Centrelink account or by calling, providing details of your income, expenses, debts, and the loan you’re applying for.
- 3
Await assessment
Centrelink assesses your eligibility and notifies you of the outcome, the amount you can borrow, and the repayment terms.
Things to remember
Centrelink loansare only available to eligible customers, and you must repay according to the agreed terms — failure to repay can mean penalties, interest charges and debt collection activity. Whether you need help with living expenses, education costs or running a farm, there’s likely a program that fits — check your eligibility carefully and understand the repayment terms before applying. If you’re struggling with debt or hardship, additional support and advice is available from Centrelink and community organisations.
